Homework
At Bowness Primary School, we believe in encouraging our children to be lifelong learners – we hope to build on children’s interests and enthusiasm by making learning fun. Learning should be relevant and engaging, wherever it takes place – in school, on the sports pitch or in the home.
What is the purpose of homework?
Schools provide homework for a variety of reasons. At Bowness Primary School, we believe that homework can benefit our pupils for the following reasons:
It consolidates the skills we have taught in class
It allows pupils to explore areas of interest within a unit, encouraging independent study
It gives parents an insight into the learning that is taking place in class
It encourages partnerships between parents and teachers
It prepares pupils for secondary school
We most definitely encourage our parents to set aside some time each evening to read with their child – either listening to their child, reading to their child or maybe a bit of both. We also recommend that learning key skills – such as reading, spelling common words or learning times tables is, again, time well spent at home. Children may not feel as pressured and may use games or digital resources to engage them further.
As a rough guide, the table below shows homework for each year group. Please note: this list is not exhaustive and your child’s teacher will adapt the homework according to the needs of the pupils and changes to the National Curriculum.
